Another copy hanging in West's London studio that was frequently copied by his students was after the Madonna della Sedia by Raphael. That copy, however, was not by West himself but was painted by one of his English students, John Downman, on a visit to Florence in the 1770s. In 1762 West had been asked to paint a copy of the Madonna della Sedia by an English visitor to Florence, the Duke of Grafton, but he had been forced to decline because of his slow recovery from his operations.
