This book, then, is for the high resolution molecular spectroscopist who would like to learn how to understand molecules, and molecular spectra, using group theory. We believe we explain everything one needs to know about group theory in order to achieve this goal. More about the formal theory of groups is given in, for example, Wigner (1959) and Tinkham (1964). We further believe that the best way to learn is by studying examples (although this necessarily takes longer than simply quoting the 'rules') and we choose examples that we feel are the most useful for the high resolution spectroscopist.
These examples are not chosen in order to demonstrate the stunning capabilities of the mighty machinery of group theory (although we do show how group theory can efficiently enable one to determine the nuclear spin statistical weights of the highly symmetrical molecule 13C60).
