This shift has made some impact on the study of households but could perhaps be developed further. Where men appear in household analyses they often appear as obstacles to change, especially in terms of the divisions of labour and responsibilities within the household.

The private sphere seems to be especially resistant to wider changes in the gendered divisions of labour and assumptions about what constitutes 32 Gender, Power and the Household women's or men's work. , 1983).
