Here, he asserts the transhistorical primacy of the economic base over the political, legal and ideological superstructures; he speciﬁes a model of law-like and necessary evolution of diﬀerent ‘modes of production’; and he posits a mechanism of historical development driven by the contradictions between the ‘forces’ and ‘relations’ of production (Marx 1978: 4–5).
Moreover, each step in these autonomous, but mutually reinforcing rationalization processes could have been blocked by historical contingencies, with traditional institutions being reinforced by social actors in order to defend particular ideal or material interests.
